Being an intern is possibly one of the coolest things I’ve done in my life (and the fact that I’m an intern at a really fun agency doesn’t hurt either). There’s this huge opportunity to learn a lot in a short amount of time that you can’t get from any other type of job. As an intern, you walk in with your employer having little to no expectations for your skills/areas of strength so the only way you can go is up. In my case, I plan on going up, up and away! During my time here I want to try to learn as much as possible from the amazingly talented Abbi PR team.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned about public relations since I started this internship it’s that to survive in the PR world, you have to be a good hunter. It’s not like we’re cooking deer over here at Abbi, it’s just an analogy. In order to find people around the world that you don’t personally know you have to track them down, do a little detective work and find out how to reach them. This is the essence of a successful PR person. If you can hunt them, they will come. It’s like Abbi always says “I have to be courted.” No journalist or magazine editor is going to pay attention to you if you just shoot them an email and leave it at that. It’s about finding them, building a relationship, pursuing them and ultimately mutually benefiting from the relationship. Sounds a lot like dating right? It pretty much is. Except PR people actively go out and try to make a bunch of different relationships at once, which, in the world of dating, is considered somewhat distasteful.
